After living for 90 days in the antiseptic arrivals hall at Japan’s Narita International Airport, Chinese activist Feng Zhenghu announced on Tuesday that his protest was over and he’d be returning home.

The human rights lawyer tried eight times to fly back to China after a stay in Tokyo, each time being refused entry by Shanghai authorities. After the eighth failed attempt, Feng decided he would not leave the customs hall until the Chinese regime changed its mind.

As a result of Japan’s intervention, he finally got his wish. For 90 days, Feng subsisted on donations of dried goods and had no way to shower. For the activist who has been jailed and tortured in China, it is not clear what kind of reception will greet him when he finally lands home.
