Nicole Kidman, Australian actress and multi-award winner, will add another to her cabinet—the 2011 Cinema Vanguard Award to be given at the 26th Santa Barbara Film Festival on Feb. 5.
The award, for actors who have taken “artistic risks” and made a “significant and unique contribution to film,” was announced today by the festival organizers, OnTheRedCarpet reported.
“Honoring Nicole Kidman is so exciting for us here at SBIFF,” festival director Roger Durling said.
Durling described the actress’s work as “immensely diverse,” adding, “with this year’s heart-wrenching and brilliant performance in Rabbit Hole—a project she helped develop as well—it is exactly who we should be celebrating with the 2011 Cinema Vanguard Award.”
In Rabbit Hole, Kidman, who was born in Hawaii and raised in Australia, plays a mother struggling to cope with the death of her 4-year-old son after a hit-and-run accident.
The 43-year-old actress has three children of her own, two adopted during her 11-year marriage to actor Tom Cruise and a baby girl with husband singer Keith Urban. She said she found working on Rabbit Hole emotionally difficult, OTRC reported.
Kidman is renowned for her starring roles in movies such as Moulin Rouge and To Die For, amongst many others.
As for her latest award, she follows in the footsteps of performers such as Peter Sarsgaard, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Ryan Gosling.
