The NFL’s review of Cleveland Browns quarterback—and former Heisman Trophy winner—Johnny Manziel’s police investigation of the Jan. 30 incident “is ongoing” according to NFL spokesman Greg Aiello who talked to Cleveland.com.
For Manziel it’s the second time in the last three months that he’s been investigated by the NFL for a domestic incident following the October situation with his girlfriend Colleen Crowley.
The latest drama involved police responding to an incident at an apartment building near the campus of Texas Christian University—where Crowley is a student—on the morning of Jan. 30. Although it’s unclear whether Crowley was the one who called the police or not, a 23-year-old female had reported she was involved in a disturbance with Manziel.
What happens with the NFL’s investigation of Manziel is anyone’s guess but the smart money is on Cleveland releasing their former first round pick after just two tumultuous years.
After winning the Heisman Trophy with Texas A&M, Manziel was widely considered the most talented quarterback in the 2014 NFL Draft. But perceived questions about his character—along with his relatively-short 6-foot frame—scared a number of teams off and the Browns wound up taking him with the 22nd overall pick.
The problems began right away—though subtle at first.
Manziel was pictured partying in Las Vegas on Memorial Day weekend just weeks after the draft—not a huge deal. Then just a couple weeks later he was pictured floating around a pool bar on an inflatable swan with a champagne bottle in his hand.
A month later, a photo of Manziel rolling up a $20 bill in a bathroom of a bar went viral—and it happened just a week after he was reportedly partying it up with Justin Bieber and Floyd Mayweather.
Then in November 2014, police were called to an incident in Manziel’s downtown home (The 9 at the Metropolitan) after the star quarterback was accused of punching a drunken, hug-seeking fan.
Of course, star quarterback was not how Manziel was performing on the field. The former college standout started two games all season and his final 2014 statistics were dreadful—18/35 passing for 175 yards and two interceptions. Good for a quarterback rating of 42.0.
After the season Manziel checked himself into rehab (for 73 days) and looked much-improved on the field in his second season in the league—eventually becoming a starter. But after reportedly promising coaches he would be good over the bye week, a video surfaced of Manziel partying it up again and he was demoted from starter to third-string quarterback.
How long they put up with after this is anyone’s guess.
