Abacus Kowloon dropped down to third on the Hong Kong Rugby Premiership League table following their narrow loss 22-21, away to SCAA Standard Life CWB Rams at So Kon Po Recreation Ground last Saturday Nov 17.
Leighton Asia HKCC made good progress, with a convincing 34-18 win over ONEwork’s Valley at Aberdeen Sports Ground and trail Newedge Club by just two points.
Meanwhile, Newedge Hong Kong Football Club continued their winning form and maintained their lead in the standings with a home win against Verizon HK Scottish 24-11. Trailing 16-3 at half-time, HK Scottish put up a good performance in the second half to pull points back with a try and then a penalty to get them to 19-11 halfway through the second half. However, Club wrapped up the game with strong forwards’ play producing a try towards the end of the game.
Matches from last weekend marked the half-way mark of the 2012-13 Hong Kong Rugby Football Union Premiership League season.
While Newedge Club (with 24 points) lead the table and have a game in hand, their points difference advantage is a whopping 42 over HKCC and 67 over Kowloon. Seven weekends of matches remain, but with each team having a bye, each team has six matches left to play—apart from Newedge and CWB Rams that have seven to play and whose Nov 10 cancelled match is yet to be rescheduled.
However, there is still plenty of football to be played for HKCC (22) or Kowloon (20) to win the prized top position from HKFC before the finals. Welsh Tigers (12), HK Scottish (11), CWB Rams (10) and Valley (5) all seem out of contention.
