The only match in real doubt last Saturday Nov 16 in the HKRFU Paul Y Premiership was between Newedge Club and WhichWay Valley at Sports Road.

The other two clubs at the top end of the ladder Abacus Kowloon and Leighton Asia HKCC were against bottom of the table opponents Borrelli Walsh Tigers and HK Scottish, and both won their matches convincingly, 32-1 and 31-20 respectively.

The match between Club and Valley was the big one of the Round 6 matches.

Club have had a slow start to the season and with HKCC and Valley turning on the style, Club have been pushed down to the bottom half of the standings.

But, in this hard fought derby it was a match of two halves.

Valley outplayed Club in the first half with a try by Alex Baddeley and a conversion and two penalties from the boot of Khrist Kopetsky giving Valley a 13-6 advantage at the break.

Gavin Hadley had scored two penalties for Club.

Newedge Club’s strength up front in the second half changed the match. Daniel Browne went over for a try and a penalty by Hadley took Club into a 14-13 lead.

Attacks by Valley were staunchly defended and a drop goal by Robert McDermott took Club to a 17-13 win.

Meanwhile, the win by HKCC puts them on 23 points and a small 4-point cushion at the top of the standings ahead of Kowloon on 19 and Valley are third on 18 points.

HKCC and Valley still have to play their postponed match (now scheduled for Tuesday Jan 7, 2014) the outcome of which is looking ever more important.

Newedge Club are fourth in the standings on 15 points. But the clash between Valley and HKCC this coming weekend is also a big match.
