AUCKLAND, New Zealand—New Zealand's athletes will not be put at risk at the Commonwealth Games in India says team chef de mission Dave Currie.
The nineteenth Commonwealth Games will be taking place October 3—14 in Delhi.
Mr Currie will be leaving for India on Tuesday where he will be making a final evaluation as to whether it will be safe for New Zealand's sports teams to take part in the games says Yahoo News.
The kiwi team comprises 195 athletes with the youngest being only 14 years old.
"I need to look their parents in the eye and say 'I believe your child is going to be safe'. If I can't do that then we can't go," Mr Currie was reported by Yahoo as saying.
The committee would be taking its final advice from the New Zealand Government, said New Zealand Olympic Committee president Mike Stanley
"That could be right up until the start of the Games and it will be monitored through the Games," he told Yahoo when asked about the deadline for a decision.
Mr Stanley was present at a Games security conference in Delhi last month with members of the New Zealand police.
He described the security plan for the games at that time as being 'very robust and well tested', according to www.stuff.com
A cloud hangs over the games as threats are received from terrorist groups including a Pakistan-based group that could be linked to al Qaeda.
