NEW YORK—A plan to rent out up to 10,000 bicycles throughout the five boroughs is supported by 72 percent of New York City’s voters in a Quinnipiac University Poll released on Oct. 20. More New Yorkers want a bike rental lot in their neighborhoods, 59 percent, than not, 34 percent.

A majority of the voters, 58 percent, think that bike lanes are good. Backing for the citywide bike rental program ranges by borough: Manhattan is the most supportive with 78 percent, Staten Island is least so, with 48 percent favoring and 44 percent against the plan.

“Enthusiasm for these cycling initiatives is strongest among the young,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

Younger voters (under 35) are more likely to back biking initiatives, compared to people over 35.
