NEW YORK—New York City won’t keep personal records from future applicants for its immigrant-friendly municipal ID cards, though a court has temporarily blocked the city from destroying more than 900,000 current cardholders’ records.
Mayoral spokeswoman Rosemary Boeglin said Wednesday the city would no longer keep copies of identity documents submitted by new applicants for IDNYC cards.
But the fate of current cardholders’ documents is unclear. City law allows for destroying them Dec. 31. The law partly reflected concern about the possible election of a Republican president such as President-elect Donald Trump, who has pledged to deporting millions of people living in the U.S. illegally.
Two Republican state Assembly members sued. And courts this week barred the city from erasing the records, at least until a Dec. 21 hearing.
