NEW YORK—This week’s nor'easter brought 6 inches of snow in some parts of the city, and some minor flooding in areas already hit during Superstorm Sandy. Aside from some most New Yorkers made it through the area’s second storm relatively smoothly.
“Thankfully, our recovery from this storm should be relatively swift, and we’re still left with the problem of recovering from Hurricane Sandy,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Thursday.
The storm “knocked out power for thousands of Con Ed customers in our city, some of whom may have only recently had their lights turned back on,” said Bloomberg.
The Long Island Power Authority confirmed that the nor'easter caused further damage to the electric system, with 123,000 additional power outages.
Wet, heavy snow created temporarily unsafe conditions in parks, causing Bloomberg to order New York City parks, playgrounds, and beaches to remain closed Thursday. “There are still a lot of leaves on trees and that holds the snow and that just gets more weight on the limbs, and more likelihood of a tree falling down,” said Bloomberg in a statement.
The majority of parks and playgrounds were expected to reopen Friday after city staff inspected them for safety.
In preparation for the storm Wednesday, Bloomberg had ordered parks and beaches to close, and suspended all exterior construction work. Construction work resumed Thursday morning.
