After a tough loss last week to Real Salt Lake, the New York Red Bulls bounced back for an impressive victory over the Colorado Rapids at Red Bull Arena 3–1 on Saturday.

The Red Bulls were in full force having four starters (Bouna Coundoul, Rafa Marquez, Dane Richards, and Roy Miller) back from international duty.

The Red Bulls started out strong creating several chances early in the first half. The game was thought to be evenly matched, considering both teams are both contending for postseason spots, with the Red Bulls hanging onto second place in the Eastern Conference and the Rapids maintaining fourth place in the West.

Early on there were some opportunities that Red Bulls couldn’t capitalize on. In the fourth minute Dane Richards came up the left side going full speed and burned two defenders to put a solid shot on Rapids keeper Matt Pickens.

The home team’s first goal came from forward Thierry Henry, who slotted home a back-heel pass from Joel Lindpere. It was Henry’s second MLS goal.

Goal number two for the Red Bulls came in 32nd minute where Rafa Marquez took a free kick that Tony Tchani got on the end of and played the ball to Tim Ream who finished with a one-touch shot from close range.

After Marquez’s free kick the ball never hit the ground until it was in the goal, the play looked like something that was worked on in practice. The goal was Tim Ream’s first goal in Major League Soccer.

The Rapids weren’t completely dominated by the Red Bulls in the first half. After the half time break the Rapids came out rejuvenated and ready to play.

In the 45th minute the Rapids put a shot on goal that rebounded off Red Bull keeper Bouna Coundoul for another opportunity. This gave midfielder Mehdi Ballouchy a quality chance that he ricocheted off the left post.

Then only minutes later, Rapids forward Omar Cummings sprinted from midfield with the ball to take an excellent shot from 15 feet beyond the box. The shot pinged in off the bottom of the cross bar and into the back of the net—a truly impressive effort.

Although the Rapids made a valiant effort to get back into it, the Red Bulls were just too much and just six minutes later Dane Richards answered with his second goal of the season. Dane Richards ball handling skills and patience with the ball are improving steadily throughout the season, making him a threat on the field.

The Red Bulls will next travel to Dallas and play FC Dallas on Thursday. With only six games left in the regular season for the Red Bulls, it looks as though the Red Bulls are a good bet to make the postseason.
