The New York Rangers were able to squeak by 3–1 past a relentless New Jersey Devils team that was hungry having lost five games in a row on Wednesday night in Newark. Rangers defenseman Michal Rozsival scored the game-winning goal in the second period.
New Jersey came out in the first period aggressively forechecking and jumped out to an early lead with a goal by Travis Zajac at 6:13. The goal came out of a scramble in front of the net where Rangers goaltender Henrik Lundqvist was sprawled out on the ice after having stopped several attempts.
The Devils lead was short lived, lasting only 47 seconds, when the Blueshirts’ Brian Boyle scored his 14th goal of the season beating Devils veteran goaltender Martin Brodeur with a floating one-timer. Brodeur got a piece of the puck with the bottom of his glove, but it wasn’t enough.
Much of the game was dominated by the Devils. Not until halfway through the second period was there consistent strong play from the Rangers. By that point, the game had gone from primarily being played in the Rangers zone and center ice to one of end-to-end action.
Both goaltenders played well with Lundqvist, in particular, having an exceptional game. Lundqvist saved 43 shots—a season high for the Swedish star.
After the game-winning goal by Rozsival, the Devils bounced back with Mattias Tedenby on a breakaway. Tedenby tried to beat Lundqvist through the five-hole but was shutdown by the game’s first star.
It was a game that saw its fair share of heavy hits and rough stuff as expected given the history. Dainius Zubrus and Boyle fought in front of the Devils net during the second period. The average height of the two goliaths in this tilt was 6-feet-6-inches. Boyle needed an assist to record a “Gordie Howe hat trick.”
In a game where the Rangers were largely outplayed and dominated Henrik Lundqvist was all the difference providing another spectacular performance for the Rangers.
This was the first of three games that will be played on the road for the Rangers. Next up is a trip to Florida where they’ll face the Tampa Bay Lighting and Florida Panthers this weekend.
