New York Jets coach Sal Alosi, who was videotaped tripping a Miami Dolphins player running along the sideline during a game several weeks ago, has cost his team $100,000, according to the Associated Press.
Alosi, an assistant coach, also told players to form a wall on the sideline then stuck out his knee, tripping Nolan Carroll during a punt return.
“We will comply with the league’s decision,” the Jets stated, according AP. NFL officials, in a statement, said Alosi “placed players in a prohibited area on the sideline to impede an opposing team’s special teams players and gain a competitive advantage.”
Jets coach Rex Ryan told AP that he “wasn’t aware that was going on.”
As for Alosi’s fate, the Jets told ESPN that they will make a decision after the season is over. For the incident, Alosi was suspended for the rest of the season.
“Quite honestly, we’re looking to get through the season right now and then [team owner] Woody [Johnson], [general manager] Mike [Tannenbaum], and I will make a decision at a different time. Right now, our focus is on trying to beat the Bills and get ready to move forward in the playoffs,” Ryan told ESPN.
Alosi was fined $25,000.
Throughout the season, the Jets have been in the media limelight again and again.
Before the season, they appeared on HBO’s Hard Knocks. During the season, female reporter Ines Sainz complained that she felt uncomfortable in the team’s locker room. And nearly a year ago, Ryan received a $50,000 fine for making an obscene gesture toward a fan.
“We got distractions every day man,” cornerback Darrelle Revis told ESPN. “You can just put them on the stack of the other distractions that go around here.”
