A state of emergency has been declared in the state of New York by Governor Andrew Cuomo. The entire state of New York is covered under the declaration and drivers of all types of vehicles have been told to stay off of I-84 until further notice.

A winter storm across the state has brought heavy snow, ice and freezing rain.

“This is a significant winter storm impacting all regions of the state and we are taking all necessary steps to keep New Yorkers safe,” Governor Cuomo said in a statement.  He added that people should stay off roads, check in on others, and stay inside until the worst has passed.

New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald said that crews are working to clear roads.

In New York City and on Long Island, salt shortages have been reported.

LaGuardia International Airport wasn’t expected to start operating flights until noon.
