NEW YORK—One of many initiatives by the city to engage the public and use technology—helping it become more transparent, NYC Big Apps is an ongoing series of technology competitions tackling real world issues that the public can help solve.
This challenge offers a $50,000 cash prize to software developers for the best new applications that take open data provided by the government and turn it into something easily accessible by the public. Applications on any platform—be it Internet, cellphone, or personal computer—are acceptable.
Submissions have been accepted since Oct. 11., and the last day to enter is Jan. 25.
On Jan. 7, a NYC Big Apps 3.0 Developer Day will be held at Pivotal Labs, 841 Broadway, eighth floor. Developers and designers can participate for free from 10 a.m to 6 p.m, with time to work on an app enhanced by potential face-to-face collaboration with others involved in the challenge.
The event is first come, first served. You can register at http://ept.ms/tWkxJq
