NEW YORK—The City Council on Tuesday unanimously passed a bill that requires police and schools to publish crime data. The Student Safety Act, if it is signed into law by the mayor, as is expected, will post information about student arrests and campus disciplinary measures online in a searchable database.

The Student Safety Act will require the Department of Education and the NYPD to submit reports to City Council. The reports will detail school-based disciplinary actions such as suspensions, on-campus policing, arrests, and summons issued by school safety authorities or police.

Statistics can then be generated along the categories of race/ethnicity, gender, grade level, age, and whether the student has special education or English language learner status.
