American Ballet Theatre’s ‘The Nutcracker’ at BAM

E.T.A. Hoffmann’s (1776-1822) whimsical world descends upon the Brooklyn Academy of Music from Wednesday, Dec. 22, to Sunday, Jan. 2. American Ballet Theatre’s (ABT) “The Nutcracker” brings toy soldiers, fairies, mice, and of course, the nutcracker to BAM’s Howard Gilman Opera House with a live orchestra. ABT artist-in-residence Alexei Ratmansky’s new version of this Tchaikovsky classic is sure to warm you and your family’s hearts.

Prism Concerts: The Organ Series at Central Synagogue

On the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month, the Gabe Wiener Foundation presents a free lunchtime concert, part of the Prism Concerts: The Organ Series at the Central Synagogue located at 123 E. 55th St., at Park Avenue. The first concert of each month features organists from around the globe, while the latter concert spotlights the next generation of organists—students from the many acclaimed universities around the city. If you have not been to one yet, you can spend your lunch break at upcoming concerts on Tuesday, Dec. 28 or Jan. 11, which will feature acclaimed organist Catherine Rodland.

E-Waste Recycling Events

Don’t feel guilty about getting rid of your old electronics after getting new ones for Christmas. The Ecology Center will host its eighth annual After the Holidays E-waste Events throughout January 2011 to recycle unwanted or broken gadgets, including computers, printers, cell phones, and power supplies. The center will host 10 collecting events, starting with the one at Union Square Park’s north plaza on Jan. 2 and ending with the one on West 62nd Street, between Columbus and Amsterdam avenues, on Jan. 23.

Alan Gilbert Conducts Chopin and Tchaikovsky

Let the holiday spirit last a bit longer at a Chopin and Tchaikovsky concert on Jan. 4 conducted by Alan Gilbert, music director of New York Philharmonic. Pianist Yulianna Avdeeva, winner of 16th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition, will play Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, Act II at the Avery Fisher Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Ticket price ranges from $40 to $127.

Shen Yun Performing Arts at Lincoln Center

Finish off your holiday season with an exhilarating performance by Shen Yun Performing Arts at the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater. The world-touring show, which has been described as “a study in grace, wisdom, and the virtues,” runs from Jan. 6 to Jan. 15. Shen Yun brings to the stage 5,000 years of Chinese culture and features Chinese classical and ethnic dances, 3-D backdrops, and a live orchestra.
