NEW YORK—The New York City beach season officially ended on Labor Day. Swimming is now prohibited as lifeguards are not on duty while beaches are closed.

“Don’t go into the water, it’s phenomenally dangerous,” Mayor Bloomberg said on Wednesday at a press conference. “I don’t care how much you want to cool off it’s just not worth drowning.”

Beaches will reopen on Memorial Day 2013.
