NEW YORK—The NYC Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has created an interactive digital test to help New Yorkers better plan for disasters and emergencies.

The NYC Readiness Challenge is an online tool that outlines procedures for real-life emergency situations, training people to make quick and rational decisions during emergencies.

Topics covered range from how to stay better informed, how to prepare pets and people with special needs for emergency situations, to how to stack emergency supplies.

One post reads as follows: “Ella and Jonsie are home alone. Damage from the storm makes the apartment unsafe and they need to evacuate. What do they need in order to leave safely?”

Another: “Phone lines are jammed. Yabo’s partner is working late and he has not heard from him. How can Yabo contact his partner?”

“This exercise gave me different situations and tested my ability to react quickly and effectively,” said Fund for the City of New York President Mary McCormick on an OEM Facebook post.

“Preparation saves lives, the more we know, the better decisions we’ll make. The next time you have a few minutes to spare, make sure you take the Readiness Challenge and gain knowledge that will last a lifetime.”
