The final moments of Queens jogger Karina Vetrano were revealed on Sept. 12 in a newly released video obtained by Crime Watch Daily.
A video camera near Spring Creek Park in Howard Beach captured an earbuds-wearing Vetrano clad in black Spandex shorts and a running top at 5:46 p.m. Aug. 2, just hours before her father, Phillip Vetrano discovered her body off a beaten path in a Queens park. An autopsy determined that Karina was strangled and sexually assaulted.
New York City investigators along with the Vetrano family continue to search for answers in the murder case that has yielded no suspects and only a few leads.
A fellow jogger who disappeared after the death of Vetrano was cleared of any wrongdoing after he turned himself into authorities for an interview.
On Aug. 31, police released a sketch of a person who could possibly help solve the case. The man described as a black male between 35 and 45 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches tall with a medium build and last seen wearing dark pants, a red shirt and a dark wool hat, isn’t considered a suspect in the case.
“We want to speak to this person because we feel that he was there,” NYPD Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce said. “He is not a subject. He is not even a POI (person of interest).”
The man in the sketch is still being sought.
Detectives have developed a DNA profile of the suspect, but there were no matches in the national database known as Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).
The Vetrano family have asked for the public’s help in bringing their daughter’s killer to justice. They have also offered the $300,000 reward money to the suspect and his family members.
“Turn yourself in. I will make sure that reward money goes to the person of your choice. The sister, your mother, your brother. It’s a life-changer,” Phillip said. “You will be caught, so take advantage of that.”
