NEW YORK—For the first time in over 50 years, the men and women of the NYPD have a new precinct on Staten Island.

On Monday, Mayor Michael Bloomberg cut the ribbon on the newly completed 121st Precinct station house in the Graniteville section of Staten Island. The new precinct, which will employ more than 200 uniformed and civilian personnel, is the fourth police station on Staten Island.

“Over the past 12 years, we have made historic progress in fighting crime on Staten Island and across the entire city,” said Mayor Bloomberg in a statement. “The new 121st Precinct is designed to meet the needs of the growing borough of Staten Island and is a major investment in continuing to reduce crime.”

In keeping with the mayor’s mandate for a greener city, the two-story, 48,797-square-foot building was designed to be energy efficient, using 25 percent less energy and 30 percent less water than similar sized police precincts. It is expected to achieve Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification.
