A tornado may have touched down in New Jersey earlier on Monday, prompting the National Weather Service to carry out an investigation.

The agency has not been able to confirm if a tornado touched down. A tornado watch was issued until around 9:45 a.m. in Union and Essex counties.

The service said it would carry out a survey in western Union County, reported NBC New York. There were reports down downed trees and wires.

A resident in Summit said he was about to make breakfast when a tree crashed into his room.

Tom Mondelli, a resident in nearby Berkeley Heights, told NJ.com that he was “was getting ready to run for cover” when he heard the wind road. “It was scary,” he said.

“It if wasn’t (a tornado) it was a hell of wind,” Mondelli said.

There was heavy flooding in many low areas across the state, including on a number of roads in Paramus, according to ABC-7 TV.

In Paterson, some major roadways were under six feet of water before the water receded.

There were also reports of cars stranded in New York’s Westchester County, while there were also downed trees.
