New Jersey Police Catch Dangerous ‘Diaper Bandit’

October 25, 2018 Updated: October 25, 2018

For the past year a peculiar sort of criminal has been leaving his malodorous mark on the roads of Franklin Township, New Jersey.

This perpetrator had been dumping loads of dirty diapers on the roads of Franklin Township for the past 10 months, according to police. While this might seem like a simple case of littering, it had much greater impact.

At best, municipal workers had to clean up the mess, which held up traffic and also exposed them to germs and bacteria associated with the diapers’ contents.

There were also much more dire outcomes.

On June 24th, 2018, a motorcyclist traveling through the intersection of Fries Mill Road and Blackwood Avenue hit a load of diapers and skidded, resulting in a serious crash, according to a post on the Franklin Township Police Department Facebook page.

The rider escaped with only minor injuries, Channel 14 News reported, but the motorcycled was totaled.

Obviously, protecting the township’s 16,500 residents from the “Diaper Bandit” was a serious priority for the Franklin Township police force.

Caught in the Act

Finally, after months of investigation, the scoundrel was caught in the act.

Franklin Township Police Officer Garrett Moretti was making an extra patrol around Route 47 and Route 40 at 3:15 a.m. on Oct. 21 when he spotted a box truck.

The driver of the truck was in the act of unloading dirty diapers when the officer arrived on the scene.

Officer Moretti arrested the driver, 68-year-old William Friedman of Newfield, New Jersey.

Friedman confessed to having been dumping loads of his grandson’s dirty diapers around the town for the past year. He described his actions as a “joke.”

Friedman was processed and charged with Interference with Transportation as well as numerous Township ordinances and traffic tickets.

The police didn’t mention if Friedman found that part of the “joke” to be amusing.
