Steve Jobs announced the new Apple iPhone 4 on Monday at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference. The new iPhone 4 design has a number of exciting features, including a thinner look, increased pixel density allowing for sharper images, an Apple A4 chip, and improved battery life.

The technology expert site Engadget.com live-blogged the event, which began with Steve Jobs talking about the iPad. At 10:31 am, Jobs formally introduced the iPhone 4. The new version has glass on the front and back and steel at the sides. It is also 24% thinner than the iPhone 3GS, making it “the thinnest smartphone on the planet,” remarked Jobs. The new iPhone will also feature Retina Display, which will allow the phone to display 326 pixels per inch, four times as many as the previous version.

The iPhone 4 runs on an A4 chip designed by Apple. Combined with a bigger battery, the phone can now power the equivalent of 7 hours of 3G talk, 6 hours of 3G browsing, 10 hours of video, 40 hours of music, or 300 hours of standby.

Another exciting feature is the addition of a gyroscope, which combined with the accelerometer, will provide 6-axis motion sensing that’s “perfect for gaming,” Jobs said.

The iPhone 4 will also have a revamped camera that can record videos in high-definition (HD).

At 10:58am, Jobs introduced Randy Ubillos, who designed an iMovie app for the iPhone. The app will be available for $4.99.

Jobs announced one final feature: video calling. Called FaceTime, it is from iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 and does not require set-up. For now, it is available through Wi-Fi only.

The iPhone 4 will go on sale June 24, $199 for the 16GB version and $299 for the 32GB. It will be available in two colors, black and white.
