Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that by the end of the year there will be 90,000 hotel rooms in New York City, a record high.

Fittingly enough, the mayor made the announcement at the newly opened Z NYC Hotel in Long Island City (LIC). LIC is pronounced “a hotbed of hotel development,” with five hotels and 650 rooms under construction, adding to the 17 hotels and 1,500 rooms already in the city.

The good news is not only for tourists and the city. It will also be good for tourism sector employees 323,000, according to the mayor.

Out of the 2,500 rooms added this year, about 750 have opened outside Manhattan. An excess of 7,000 rooms is “in the pipeline,” with 40 percent outside Manhattan.
