New Federal High Chair Standards

High chairs are supposed to keep your child safe, but between 2015 and 2016 there were an estimated 18,500 high chair-related injuries treated in US hospital emergency departments, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

Most of the incidents were due to falls when the child attempted to climb into or out of the high chair, causing it to tip over.

That’s why the CPSC is requiring all high chairs at homes and restaurants to include these new safety standards.

Chairs must have rearward stability to prevent the child from tipping over backwards, warning labels must be properly displayed, a passive crotch restraint must be in place to prevent the child from slipping out, and it must have a 3-point restraint system to buckle the child.

Many companies have already incorporated these rules into their designs, but parents should check to make sure the high chairs in their homes meet the standards.

The new standards should go in to effect next year.
