New Beauty Trend, A4 Waist Challenge, Ramps up in China

March 17, 2016 Updated: March 17, 2016

A new beauty trend sweeping across China has women holding up sheets of paper to illustrate how small their waists are.

The sheets are A4 paper, measuring roughly 8 x 11 inches, prompting the trend to be dubbed the A4 Waist Challenge.

The trend started earlier this year, when women across the country started posting pictures of themselves and the pieces of paper on Weibo, a popular social network in China.

The trend took off and spread to other Asian countries.

While some have praised the womens’ beauty and fitness, others say the trend is dangerous and setting unrealistic standards for many women.

“So are they insinuating smaller is better? Not cool to offend the girls who don’t measure up in this manner,” said one Twitter user.

Others suggested the trend be switched to holding the paper sideways, or in landscape mode, for a more realistic waist measurement.

“Just hold that piece of paper in “landscape” position, girls ! #A4waistchallenge is unrealistic challenge for,” said another user.
