The Metropolitan Transportation Authority held an opening ceremony for the new Atlantic Terminal Pavilion in Brooklyn on Tuesday.

“This grand new entry pavilion will benefit our customers for generations to come as well as become a landmark for Brooklyn,” said Long Island Rail Road President Helena Williams. “It is truly a space that we can enjoy.”

The Pavilion is a three-story building at the intersection of Atlantic and Flatbush avenues. Its glass wall allows natural light to reach the LIRR concourse and subway stations, while shading fins prevent excess heat from entering the building in the summer. A new HVAC system was also installed.

The terminal, which serves 57,150 LIRR and NYC Transit subway customers every day and connects to 10 subway lines and five buses, is now linked to an office building and a retail complex and has new facilities like a ticket office, public rest rooms, and a customer waiting area.

“It has better information; it has accessibility to the disabled community; it has comfortable facilities,” said MTA Chairman and Chief Executive Jay Walder. “It’s a place, simply put, where you want to take a train from or to.”

The construction project began in 2002 and cost $108 million, provided by the Federal Transit Administration and the MTA LIRR Capital Program.

“Many Brooklynites really didn’t realize that we have an LIRR terminal in Brooklyn,” Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz said. “We know now that LIRR is in the house.”
