NATO Workshop Studies Early Indicators of Terrorism in Immigrants

The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) held an advanced research workshop for social scientists this past weekend in Milan, Italy, to study early behavioral indicators of terrorism in young European immigrants.

The workshop also looked at best practices for successful integration of primarily Turkish immigrants into European culture, while still allowing them to retain a sense of their own nationality.

Twenty-eight speakers were invited to lecture on topics such as the economic repercussions of emigrating from and to Turkey, “radicalization as a constructive choice,” and factors that prompt immigrants to work with radical Islamic groups. The workshop also sought to determine the best means of data collection and analysis to detect early terrorist indicators. The results of the workshop will be published in book form in the NATO series “Science for Peace and Security.”
