President Bush and the first lady Laura Bush attended the annual National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony on Dec. 4. This tradition started in 1923. In early December of every year, the President and the first lady attend this ceremony and light up the National Christmas Tree.

President Bush said, ”Christmas is a time to rejoice, and to give thanks for the blessings of the season and for the blessings that surround us every day of the year. We also remember that we have a responsibility to help those in need. America is a compassionate and generous land. And acts of kindness toward others fulfill the spirit of the season.”

“We ask for God to watch over our men and women in uniform who are serving overseas. Their families miss them—hold a seat open for them—and pray for their safe return. America’s military men and women stand for freedom—and they serve the cause of peace. Many of them are serving in distant lands tonight, but they are close to our hearts.”

President Bush joked, ”Santa, thanks for coming (laughter). Glad you made it. I know you’ve got a lot of commitments this time of year. By the way, we have a lot of chimneys at the White House— (laughter)—if you’re looking for something to do. I appreciate all our entertainers. Thanks for being here. This is a fantastic evening.”

In the end, first lady Laura Bush and two girls whose fathers serve at the war in Iraqi lit up the National Christmas Tree.

The National Christmas Tree is located at the Ellipse south of the White House. This year’s Christmas Tree is decorated with more than 45,000 energy-efficient LED lights. It’s a full 50% more energy efficient than the 2007 display. The 42-inch tall, star-shaped tree topper is an “heirloom” topper used for the last two years. All these lights are provided by General Electric (GE).

The National Christmas Tree is surrounded by the fifty Christmas Trees representing the fifty states of the United States, the display of Jesus’ birth scene in a stable, and Santa’s Workshop. It’s open from Dec. 6 to Jan. 1 between 6:00pm to 8:30pm on weekdays and 4:00pm to 8:30pm on weekends. There are various Christmas performance during this time that attract a lot of visitors.
