National Cat Day is Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, giving people a reason to look at cat videos, pictures, and .gif images.

The day was actually founded by Pet Lifestyle Expert & Animal Welfare Advocate Colleen Paige eight years ago “to help galvanize the public to recognize the number of cats that need to be rescued each year and also to encourage cat lovers to celebrate the cat(s) in their life for the unconditional love and companionship they bestow upon us,” according to her website.

Paige notes that there are around four million cats that enter shelters each year. Of those cats, one and two are euthanized.

“Often cats are overlooked and under-appreciated because they don’t usually have jobs like dogs. But cats still lower blood pressure, offer unconditional love and companionship and alert their owner of danger,” she writes.

Here’s a few facts about felines (some of these are well-known):

- Cats sleep around 16 hours per day.

- Of the hours spent awake, cats spend a third of their time cleaning themselves.

- According to Animal Planet, around 50 million cats in the U.S. are overweight

- The teeth of cats are sharper when they’re kittens. After six months, they lose them.

- Cats have four toes on their back paws and five on their front paws.
