Natalie Portman is tipped to win her first Oscar in the dark ballet movie Black Swan, following rave reviews at the London and Venice Film Festivals.

Art-lovers can expect a superlative visual treat watching Darren Aronofsky’s captivating cinematography combined with costumes from Rodarte, featuring feather and jewel-encrusted tutus.

Designing the tutus was quite a challenge for the Rodarte team, sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy told New York Magazine.

“A tutu is thirteen layers of tulle sticking straight out and then it’s over the body, so you can imagine. It’s crazy!” Laura said.

Laura explained to NY Magazine the artistry behind creating the intricate costumes for the competing ballerinas.

“Building a tutu is one of the lost couture arts,“ she said. ”Everyone will know it’s like getting your hand on the prize, like a coveted piece of couture that no one ever gets to see.”

“You can’t go rent a tutu. You have to own it,“ she continued. ”They’re never actually perfect, but from afar, when you’re in the audience, it looks like one of the most beautiful things in the world.”

Black Swan is Aronofsky’s latest masterpiece. He also directed Requiem for a Dream and The Wrestler, and there were reports earlier this month that he may direct Portman as Lois Lane in a remake of Superman.

Along with Portman, the psychological drama stars Mila Kunis, Christopher Gartin, Winona Ryder, Sebastian Stan, Vincent Cassel and Barbara Hershey.
