The upcoming Naked Gun movie, a reboot of the series, will feature Ed Helms cast as Frank Drebin.

Robert Ben Garant, one half of the writing team for the movie, said that “Our take is that Ed Helms is Frank Drebin, no relation,” Garant said. “That’s how he introduces himself.”

Drebin was played by Leslie Nielsen in the original series. Helms is an increasingly prolific actor who starred in the “The Office” television series, as well as “The Hangover” film series.

Garant told Crave Online recently that they’re trying to write in the style of the original three films. “We are trying to reinvent the world because that world was very ‘Dragnet,’ but we’re trying to fit in 100 jokes a page,” Garant said. “It’s going to be a lot of fun. We’re very much embracing the style.”

Garant, a big fan of the original series, said he’s not sure if Helms will dye his hair gray.

Garant and his writing partner Tom Lennon also write the Night at the Museum movie series, which is going on its third film.

There’s no set release date for the Naked Gun movie.
