Rafael Nadal, fresh off his record-breaking seventh French Open title, fell to unseeded Lukas Rosol in five sets, 6-7(9), 6-4, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the second round Thursday at the All-England Club.
The shocking loss for Nadal is his earliest exit in a Grand Slam event since losing in the second round again at Wimbledon in 2005—as a 19-year-old. In between those two losses he’s advanced to the finals five times, winning in 2008 and 2010. Today wasn’t one of those times though.
Rosol, ranked 100th in the world, had an impressive service game. The 26-year-old served up 22 aces on the day with speed on his serve clocked as high as 134 mph. He was also successful at the net scoring 22 times in 28 runs to midcourt.
Rosol will now play Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third round.
