NEW YORK—State Senator Daniel Squadron is calling for the resignation of fellow senator Malcolm Smith, after Smith was arrested early on April 2 on charges of being involved in a plot to bribe his way into the city mayoral race.

Smith, a democrat, tried to pay off some of New York City’s Republican party bosses to get himself on the ballot as a GOP candidate, federal authorities said.

Smith is currently caucusing with Republicans as part of a breakaway group of four Democrats, which call themselves the Independent Democratic Conference.

Squadron said in a statement that regardless of whether Smith is guilty or not, he should resign.

“He has lost the public trust,” Squadron said. “He should resign.”

Representatives for Smith are saying the senator is innocent.
