A deer that was believed to be roadkill jumped out of the trunk of a parked car in Michigan upon police inspection.

Two Kalamazoo police officers were on patrol in the middle of the night when they noticed a suspicious vehicle, reported NBC News.

When they approached the man, he said, “I hit a deer. I figured you’d want to see it.” Police said he told them he was going to use it for meat.

The officers, who wanted to check to see if the deer was tagged with a permit, opened the trunk of his vehicle, and the deer sprung out. The sudden movement cause both officers to jump back.

“The officer merely wanted to check on the tagging of the deer to make sure it was appropriately tagged with a kill permit or accident permit,” police Lt. Stacey Geik told KSN television.

The deer managed to escape into a nearby wooded area.

The car owner was reportedly at a loss for words as he believed the animal was dead.

“You just never know what you’re going to encounter,” Geik added. “You never know. There could be worse things in trunks.”
