Once, there were 117 customer service numbers for the Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA). Now there is one.

The new number, 511, will work for any comment or question about MTA’s subways, buses, railroads or bridges, and tunnels. The MTA announced the change came with the help of the New York State Department of Transportation, including full funding, and the New York State Travel Information Line.

Information provided through an automated service will include trip schedules and planning, lost and found, MetroCard info, and rail tickets. Callers will be directed to the appropriate MTA agency if they need further assistance.

The new 511 is currently, and will continue to be, used for information about roads and bridges, traffic and congestion, and ferries and public transportation run by other agencies. It is accessible throughout New York state. The release notes Access-A-Ride customers should continue to use their existing phone numbers.
