A Florida mother was charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child after not seeking medical care for her 1-year-old child after he sustained scalding burns.

The mother, Christina Hurt, refused to seek professional help for her child. Authorities were called only after Ethan Coley stopped breathing, and only by concerned neighbors. Hurt said that she didn’t want to alert authorities since she didn’t have custody of Ethan, WSVN reported.

Hurt told police that she was taking out the trash, and when she came back inside, her 10-year-old daughter was holding Ethan. She had just tried to give Ethan a bath in hot water, and Ethan was screaming, according to WSVN.

Hurt didn’t seek help, but instead gave Ethan Tylenol and juice before going to bed. The next morning she took Ethan to see friends and neighbors, still refusing to call authorities as the child’s condition deteriorated, according to the WSVN report.

“My brother ran over to try to help with the situation and found the baby – the 1-year-old – was laying on a dirty mattress,” said neighbor Molita Cunningham, “and at the time, he was trying to do CPR, but the baby threw up, [what] looked like apple juice.”

On Hurt’s Facebook page she shows off her six kids. Ethan was the youngest. Only one photo shows a man, presumably the children’s father.

In a post from Jan. 4 where she checks in at the South Florida Pediatric Partners and praises the medical center, someone references the child’s death in the comments section:

“Would have been nice if you would have taken you son here at least. Shame on you. RIP angel,” wrote Alyssa Gonzalez.

WSVN reported that Hurt was previously under investigation for child neglect by the Department of Children and Families.
