Mother & Baby Go Missing for Days out in Colombian Jungle

Maria Nelly Murillo, 18, and her 1-year-old child, Yudier Moreno, went missing after the plane they were in crashed in the jungles of Colombia. The plane was carrying the two, a pilot, and food shipments.

The small aircraft went down in Choco province, disappearing from the radar of civil aviation authorities about 20 minutes into the flight, reported the BBC.

They found coconut shells and discarded flip flops in the jungle, which gave them hope the two were still alive. They also found the child’s birth certificate near the tree, which convinced them that Murillo was attempting to leave a sign the two are still alive and need help.

Per the BBC, the search party looked through the jungle on foot, while other officials flew over the area with a helicopter.

They didn’t find anything after two days.

However, on Wednesday, they found Murillo about a quarter of a mile from the crash site.

“It’s a miracle. It is a very wild area and it was a catastrophic accident,” Col. Hector Carrascal said, per AFP.

The baby was unharmed. He said, “His mother’s spirit must have given him strength to survive.”

“The lady has wounds and minor burns and apparently the child is unharmed,” the Colombian Air Force wrote in a statement, per AFP.
