A mother and her caregiver son were found dead in their apartment in Queens, New York, after the woman’s other son didn’t hear from them and asked police to conduct a welfare check.
Their bodies showed no signs of trauma and they found no weapons in the apartment.
Police believe the mother, 93-year-old Hsiang Wang, died after her son, 66-year-old Sam Wang, died of a heart attack, the New York Daily News reports. The mother reportedly had dementia and was in a wheelchair.
Neighbors told the Daily News that both had health issues.
“He took good care of his mother for years. He’d go to the store and buy food. I’m shocked,” said Francis Garcia, 71. “He would call the ambulance services to take her to the doctors. I’ve lived here for 25 years. I’ve seen him around for 25 years. He really cared for her. It’s really sad.”
Police arrived at the apartment at about 9:20 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 21. They pronounced the pair dead at the scene of their Forest Hills Home.
Police believe they were dead for at least two days before they were found.
