The American Film Institute’s AFI Life Achievement Award, the highest honor for acting in film, will go to Morgan Freeman this year. The award will be handed out on June 9, 2011 during a gala tribute in Los Angeles. “Morgan Freeman is an American treasure,” Howard Stringer Chair of the AFI Board of Trustees said in announcing the honor. “Across decades, whether playing a prisoner, a president, or God, he embodies a calm authority that demands respect for the character and for the art form. His gifts to the cultural record are also underscored by his unmistakable voice that echoes through the hearts and minds of movie lovers around the world.” Freeman, an Oscar winner for best supporting actor in 2005 for “Million Dollar Baby,” is the second African American to receive the award. Sidney Poitier was honored in 1992.
