After being kicked out of the Senate last month, former Queens state Sen. Hiram Monserrate announced he would run to get his job back on Tuesday according to an NY1 report. Next Tuesday, a special election will be held to fill the vacant seat.

Monserrate was booted from office after having been convicted of a misdemeanor assault on his girlfriend. His main opponents in the special election are Democrat Jose Peralta and Republican Robert Beltrani.

Monserrate said that he has a good record on reducing crime and promoting education. Monseratte, the first state senator to be ousted from office since 1861, is currently appealing his expulsion from the Senate.
