While enjoying a warm cup of coffee, Officer James Givens didn’t anticipate a mother goose coming up to his police vehicle, erratically honking and pecking at his car door. Officer Givens, who has a fear of geese, threw bread at her in an attempt to make her leave. Yet, like all mothers, her gosling was in trouble and she returned to Givens again and again. It wasn’t until Givens stepped out of his vehicle and followed the goose did he see what had her upset.
Her gosling was tangled in a balloon string. Officer Givens called the Wildlife Control, but they couldn’t offer assistance and he was at a loss as what to do. The mother goose continued to honk and keep her goslings from entering the water. Officer Givens could have walked away then and returned to his job, but he didn’t. Instead, he used his resources as a police officer to bring help to this desperate mother goose.
Officer Cecilia Charron answered the call by Officer Givens for help. An animal lover, she slowly approached the geese even though she was aware that geese do have a habit of pecking when scared. She gently scooped up the scared gosling and began working quickly to unwrap the string of the helium balloon. The mother goose remained close by, anxiously awaiting the return of her baby.
After a few quick moments, Officer Charron was able to get the string from around the gosling and return the baby to the mother goose waiting. With a smile on her face, Officer Charron left the scene knowing that her expression of humanity had made a difference to that gosling and the mother goose that had been so desperately trying to get someone’s attention to rescue her baby.
