A woman accused of stabbing her daughter to death pulled up to an Orlando hospital on March 10 to ask for help for her daughter, but the girl was already dead from multiple stab wounds, Florida authorities said.

Rose Alcides Rivera, 28, confessed to repeatedly stabbing her daughter Aleyda multiple times while they were in a vehicle and then driving around until the 11-year-old died from her wounds. The child had 15 stab wounds to her back and a defensive wound on her right arm, ABC News reports.

Rivera ultimately drove to the Orlando hospital where she was taken into custody. She has been charged with first-degree murder in her daughter’s death.

As for motive, Rivera told investigators she killed the 11-year-old to keep her from having sex, but the Orange County sheriff’s office believes her claims to be unfounded.

“Based on what we know and what we’ve found so far, we believe that part to be false,” Sheriff John Mina told reporters on March 11. “Again, we are doing everything we normally do in those types of allegations and investigations to unfound that completely, but we don’t believe that’s credible.”

The sheriff’s office also said that Rivera had no known substance abuse issues and no known history of violence.

Mina says that his office believes the stabbing did actually happen in the vehicle, and that Rivera did drive around with the girl afterward. He also confirmed that at some point after the stabbing took place and before they arrived at the hospital, Rivera took her daughter’s body out of the car and then put her back in the car.

Detective Dorothy Rivera told reporters that Rivera was originally from Florida, moved to Texas 12 years ago, and had moved back to Florida in December. The detective went on to say, up until a few days before the incident, Rivera had been living with another family member. It is unclear where she spent the days leading up to the death of her daughter.

While at the hospital, Rivera was treated for a wound to her wrist, the detective confirmed. She added that, while Rivera claimed it was an attempt at suicide, the wound was only superficial.

Mina also said these types of cases can be quite hard on the community and detectives who work the case, especially a case like this one where the child was killed by her mother, but the sheriff’s office would remain professional.

“It is very difficult to investigate, but you have to stay with a clear mind to make sure you prepare the best case that you can to the State Attorney in order for this to get justice,” Detective Rivera said.

Abuse behind closed doors is difficult to prevent if nobody speaks up, which is why the sheriff’s office urged anyone who is aware of domestic violence or any kinds of abuse to call the authorities.
