Have you ever wanted to leave someone a voice message without having their phone ring? HeyTell just may be the app for that. It’s actually more than just a ring-free messaging system. It can be used as a walkie-talkie, intercom, or instant voice messaging system. The way to use it is to simply press the “Hold and Speak” button and start talking. As soon as you take your finger off the button, your message will be sent to the HeyTell user on the other end.

It’s as simple to use as the old one-talker-at-a-time technologies of yore such as CB radio or walkie-talkies. Thankfully, HeyTell makes the initial setup process just as simple. You don’t even need an account or have to type any personal information. You do need to identify yourself in your address book and likewise, you need to identify the person to whom you would be sending a message through your address book.

HeyTell delivers messages very quickly, taking a second or more to compress the message and then a little bit more to receive and deliver it. It’s not as instantaneous as an actual walkie-talkie but it is competitive with text messaging, and the call quality is head and shoulders above that of any mobile phone call.

It may seem ironic to revert to a more limited mode of communication when you have access to the latest in cell phone technology such as FaceTime, but in real-world situations, people choose what is most appropriate for their situation. HeyTell is perfect for when you want to communicate in the same manner as text messaging but don’t want to type of if you want to convey more of your personality. It may very well be safer than talking on the phone while driving since you are not straining to understand the highly compressed audio and then using what’s left of your brain capacity to carry on a conversation.

The main limitation of this technology is that users need to have smart phones with data plans and currently HeyTell only supports Android and iOS devices. HeyTell also only supports iPod Touches with built-in microphones.

HeyTell is available for free, although they do sell useful Extras inside as an in-app purchase.
