Police ended their search for missing Oklahoma University student Julia Gilbert after finding her dead in a Volkswagon that crashed into a creek by the side of the road near Edmond, Okla.
Gilbert was found dead in her silver 2002 Volkswagon Jetta that flipped over and landed in a ditch after hitting the guard rail. The location made it hard for authorities to find the vehicle since it was not easily seen from the road. There have been no reports of foul play and road conditions may have played a part in the crash. Spokesperson Glynda Chu from the Edmond Police Department confirmed these events with the Oklahoman news team.
Gilbert had been missing since early Friday morning after she left a friend’s house and never made it to her home which caused her parents to file a report.
Late night driving and hazardous winter driving conditions are known to bring about high accident rates this time of year. Gilbert’s family is mourning the tragic loss of their daughter and has yet to make a public statement.
The Civil Air Patrol in Oklahoma had been making frequent flights around the area looking for her car since Gilbert was reported missing.
An investigation directed by the Oklahoma Highway Patrol is underway to ensure that there was no foul play involved in Gilbert’s death.
