Miss New York ‘Happy’ Performance With Cup Panned on Twitter; Kira Kazantsev Responds (+Vine Video)

September 14, 2014 Updated: July 18, 2015

Miss New York’s singing of “Happy” while tapping on a cup did not impress the users on Twitter, who seemed to unanimously agree that she should not have won the competition.

Kira Kazantsev became Miss America 2015 on Sunday night.

She sang Pharrell Williams’ song while tapping on a red plastic cup like Anna Kendrick’s character did in “Pitch Perfect.”

“I keep time with the cup,” she told the New York Post before the performance. “It’s not your average Miss America talent in terms of singing Broadway tunes or opera. I’m sticking to what I can do.”

After the performance, she defended her talent.

“The reason why I chose to do that talent is I wanted every single little girl in America to be able to see that you can do that talent – you can do whatever talent you want on national television – even with a red cup – and still be Miss America and have the time of your life,” she said.

“I literally in that minute and 30 seconds had the most fun I’ve ever had. And that’s because I stayed true to myself and I did what I wanted to do for my talent, no matter what everybody else told me, and it paid off. I’m very happy about it.”

Twitter users had pointed out that Kendrick’s cup was yellow, and many felt that Kazantsev should not have made it out of the Top 10.

“I still can’t believe Miss New York won and her talent was playing flip cup…” said one user.

“So Miss New York with the red solo cup talent won??? HOT MESS!! #MissAmerica,” said another.

“Miss New York won Miss America by banging a red cup on the ground… K,” said yet another.

But other users congratulated her and said they enjoyed the performance.

“I thought Miss New York sang better then the others who are singers. Plus her “talent” was so cute & happy!!” said one.

“Congratulations Miss New York!” said another.
