Miss America is often associated more with beauty than talent, but Kelley Johnson proved that notion wrong in this year’s competition.

Kelley, who won Miss Colorado before participating in Miss America, took the stage in nurse’s scrubs.

Johnson graduated from Grand View University in Des Moines, Iowa as valedictorian in her nursing program, and shared with the judges and audience some of the  joys and challenges of being a nurse.

The monologue, which was Kelley’s talent, earned lots of praise at the competition and online.

“Watching #MissAmerica as Miss Colorado Kelley Johnson eloquently & passionately represents nurses. #notjustanurse,” said one Twitter user.

“Something of substance actually happened at the Miss America pageant,” added another.

Kelley ended as second runner up in Miss America, but she’ll still be busy with her nursing and the Miss Colorado duties.
