With the month of April in full swing, baseball stadiums around the nation have been holding their opening day one after another and the Minnesota Twins are no exception.
Target Field in Minneapolis attracted Twins fans from all over the state for the first game of the season and those in attendance got to see some special guests.
Son of Hall Of Fame center fielder Kirby Puckett, Kirby Puckett Jr., was joined by a group of legendary players such as Kent Hrbek, Tony Oliva, Rod Carew, and Harmon Killebrew on the field during the opening ceremony. The group took part in the ceremonial opening pitches to open up the stadium, the season, and the game.
The Twins battled hard against the Boston Red Sox for their opening game and emerged victorious on their memorable day on the new home turf. Jason Kubel hit the first home run of the game in a 5-2 Twins win.
One highlight from the christening of the new park was the unveiling of a metal statue depicting Twins hero Kirby Pucket who passed away in 2006. He was the second youngest retired Baseball Hall Of Famer to die as he was only 45.
Puckett played for the Twins for 11 years and was the fourth major league player to get 1,000 hits in his first five years in the major league.
The new Target Field was a treat for all long term Twins Fans as this was the location of the team’s first outdoor game since 1981. The new outdoor stadium’s construction was started in 2007 but did not open until the April 12.
