The Minnesota state Supreme Court is considering changing $2.7 billion in budget cuts ordered by Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty.

On March 15, the judges had not yet decided if the governor’s actions were legal. In Minnesota, governors have the power to reduce state spending during a crisis. The judges will decide if Gov. Pawlenty reduced spending in a way that usurped the power of the Legislature. The Associated Press reports that a group triggered the case by successfully suing to reinstate $5.3 million for a special nutrition program.
