MINNEAPOLIS—A member of Minnesota’s state legislator, Phyllis Kahn, thought Shen Yun Performing Arts New York Company was “absolutely fabulous,” after catching the show on Feb. 22 at Minneapolis’s Orpheum Theatre.

“The whole combination of the projection and the costuming, and of course, the talent of the dancers and then the stories behind it, incredible,” said Representative Kahn, serving her 21st term in office. Well qualified for her post, she has B.A. in physics from Cornell, a Ph.D. in biophysics from Yale and a M.P.A. from the J.F.K. School of Government at Harvard.

New York-based Shen Yun aims to revive 5,000 of divinely inspired civilization through traditional Chinese song and dance. It not only brings forth China’s history but presents the breath of China by including folk and ethnic dances from the country’s more than 50 ethnicities, according to the company’s website.

“It brings out all these different parts, like going to the borders of Mongolia, Tibet and things like that. It’s a fascinating production,” Representative Kahn said.

“The talent of these people is absolutely incredible, and it is so wonderful to see this huge audience. It is a unique form of entertainment,” she continued.

Accompanying the dancers is the Shen Yun New York Orchestra, composed of both Chinese instruments to give the melody yet supported by the lush sound of a Western orchestra. Representative Kahn enjoyed the orchestra and also the bilingual emcees introducing each piece.

“The thing that I like best is each of the times when they have projected figures [on backdrop] that come and then become real live figures [on stage],” Representative Kahn said. “It’s incredible.”

She was referring to the high-tech backdrops which are animated. Figures onscreen seen to come to life onstage as their roles are taken over by live performers.

Representative Kahn would definitely recommend Shen Yun to her friends. She would say: “You should bring your parents and your children too because it is so beautiful, and it is such a different introduction to a different kind of culture.”
